Throughout my spring 2023 semester, I participated in Creative Labs, a design program hosted by Rutgers' CreativeX. In a team of 5, we worked on redesigning one of the most popular fitness and health-tracking apps, myFitnessPal. A lot of our team were individuals who were passionate about fitness and health. We wanted to encourage users to have a healthier relationship with their health and fitness goals.

Problem and Goal

The main problems of the app were concerning a difficult user navigation experience, a shift towards premium features, and an unhealthy relationship with calorie counting. The growing number of negative reviews and decreasing user retention reflect heightened frustration among users who feel that the platform fails to adequately support them in achieving their health and fitness goals.

How can we create a user experience that enhances the navigation process, increase engagement with premium features, and help users have a positive relationship with health/fitness?

Objectives:

  1. Address main user paint points and enhance functionality while aligning with myFitnesspal's business model.
  2. Increase user retention rate and better align with users' goals.
  3. Give more incentive for users to engage with premium features.

Quantitative Research

In our first stages of user research, we sent out a survey (with 37 responses) to understand usage patterns regarding fitness apps. The goal is to gather insight on how we could apply the data gathered to further improve myFfitnesspal's user experience.

As we expected, users frequently complained that:

  1. No straightforward way to navigate the app, which specifically made it hard for beginners to get started.
  2. App's emphasize on calorie counting had negative effect on user usage and mental health.
  3. Things like ad's blocking the screen made the app too cluttered and confusing.

Ideation

There were three main factors we considered in our design:

Based on those pain points, we brainstormed potential questions to keep in mind for our design. We also looked at similar mobile apps to find common themes and features to prioritize. We looked at apps people had been cited using in our survey to see why those apps are more popular than myfitnesspal.

We created a general user flow with three main user flows in mind.

Final Design Decisions

How did we enhance user navigation, simplify the interface, and prioritize wanted features/functions?

How did we make users excited/more engaged about their health goals?

Reflection

This was my second time participating in CreativeX’s Creative Labs program, and I think it was a better experience than the last one. Ever since last year, I have grown much as a designer, and I think it shows throughout the design process. Customer/user needs were highlighted more deeply. Additionally, I helped apply many design principles I’ve learned over the past year, like affordances, discoverability, and feedback. Most significantly, my team this year was more collaborative, and we had a better time brainstorming ideas and setting user goals.

There were still a few issues we ran into. While we were able to accomplish the goals we had made at the beginning of the project and finish our designs, we reflected on ways that it could have still been improved. For example, we didn’t have time to implement more social features, work on the settings/notifications page, and make the header look more appealing.
